Today we will be discussing one of the strategies that has helped me the most when it comes to learning anything: spaced repetition. Whether you're tackling complex anatomical concepts or preparing for exams, understanding and implementing spaced repetition can be your secret weapon for academic success.


How Spaced Repetition Works


Ever felt the frustration of forgetting information shortly after learning it? Welcome to the Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve. Coined by psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus, this curve illustrates the rapid decline of memory without reinforcement. Spaced repetition strategically addresses this curve by scheduling reviews precisely when forgetting is on the horizon.

At its core, spaced repetition leverages the spacing effect which is a psychological phenomenon where information is better retained when revisited after gradually increasing intervals. According to neuroscience, when we encounter new information, the brain initiates the formation of memories. These memories, initially fragile, undergo strengthening through the strategic reinforcement prompted by spaced repetition. This process enhances neural connections and leads to more robust and enduring memories.


Why Spaced Repetition is Effective


The effectiveness of spaced repetition lies in its ability to optimize the forgetting curve, the rate at which information fades from memory. I am a big fan of flashcards, with concise questions on one side and answers on the other as they serve as powerful tools in this approach.
