I would say that physiology is the harder one of the two as you need a good knowledge in anatomy to even start understanding the most basic of physiological processes. While anatomy clarifies the structure and function of the human body, physiology examines the functions of the body and body methods in human life. For me, taking on physiological concepts is very different from anatomical concepts as you need to fully understand each intricate system and what plays a role in that system. Anatomy on the other hand, requires more pure memorization and many people learn it just through repetition alone. In this post, I will go over some tips that worked for me in understanding physiological processes.
Understanding the Basics
Within the vast realm of information you want to absorb, each detail that you want to learn will always contain even more intricacies. An optimal approach to start off is through laying a robust groundwork of fundamental principles that govern the physiological processes. This foundational knowledge should include concepts like homeostasis, cellular communication, and general anatomical structures. This rationale is also shown in textbooks as the universally commence with the basics of cellular biology and chemistry, preparing you with a solid foundation to start with. Once that groundwork is established, learning more intricate details becomes more manageable.
Consider cellular respiration as an example of this. Understanding that the rate-limiting enzyme, Phosphofructokinase-1, catalyzes the phosphorylation of fructose 6-phosphate to fructose 1,6-bisphosphate has almost no significance unless you have a solid comprehension of the overarching steps in glycolysis. Instead of feeling confined or frustrated when faced with an unfamiliar detail, prioritize comprehension of individual elements before diving into their interactions. This systematic approach allows you to learn one aspect at a time, constructing a comprehensive understanding. By breaking down and simplifying fundamental concepts into digestible components, you can facilitate a much smoother learning process.
Useful Tools
A solid foundation is essential, but to truly excel in learning, it's important to leverage the variety of tools at your disposal to enhance your understanding of physiological processes. One invaluable tool is visual aids. Complex systems and processes can often be better understood through diagrams, charts, and illustrations. In my experience, utilizing visual aids has significantly helped my understanding of intricate physiological concepts as I could relate them back to a visual. Look for resources like different textbooks that feature detailed diagrams or find visual representations online. The quality of the visual aid also matters a lot. Opt for visuals that are simple yet effectively convey all the necessary information (example below). These tools can provide a more memorable way to grasp the intricacies of physiological processes.

Another beneficial tool is seeking out additional resources and alternative explanations. Don't limit yourself to a single textbook or source. Leverage the internet to get access to different materials, videos, or articles that present the same concepts in diverse ways. Seeing it explained from a different point of view can help reinforce your understanding and offer alternative perspectives that resonate better with your learning style. Khan Academy, Youtube, Google, and reputable scientific journals can be valuable sources of information.
Practical Application
I've previously briefly discussed the importance of practical application as it is a key component in learning in general. Applying theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios not only strengthens your understanding but also provides a real usage for abstract concepts encountered in physiology.
One effective way to practically apply your knowledge is through your daily life. Consider physiological adaptations to exercise as they happen in real-time when you engage in a workout or play a sport. For instance, during cardiovascular exercise, such as running, your heart rate increases to supply more oxygen to working muscles. This firsthand live experience allows you to witness physiological principles in action, making the concepts more relatable and easier to grasp.

Hands-on experiences, such as laboratory work or simulations, offer another way for practical application. Engaging in experiments allows you to observe physiological processes at a microscopic level, providing a deeper appreciation for the intricacies involved. Simulations, whether virtual or physical, simulate real-world scenarios, enabling you to test theories, make predictions, and witness physiological responses firsthand.
Breaking down complex physiological systems is not just a strategy, it's a roadmap to mastering the intricate workings of the human body. By starting with the basics, visualizing with diagrams, breaking down into components, relating to real-life scenarios, using analogies, and engaging in interactive learning, you'll find yourself learning with ease.
